Sandiganbayan terminates $5B Marcos civil forfeiture case after PCGG signals no more evidence

The Sandiganbayan Special Division on Saturday, June 6, 2026 promulgated a seven-page resolution penned by Justice Bayani Jacinto terminating Civil Case 0141, the $5 billion ill-gotten wealth recovery case the Presidential Commission on Good Government filed against the estate of Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and Imelda Marcos on December 17, 1991. The resolution rests on a manifestation from the PCGG that the Commission would present no further evidence to sustain the forfeiture petition. In its manifestation, the Commission cited recoveries it has already secured through other proceedings as the basis for declining to continue. The case file traced hidden wealth assets through Swiss banks, shell companies, and properties held in cronies' names. The resolution closes the docket without a forfeiture judgment, and the remaining assets in this case file revert to whatever ownership the existing records assign them. Civil Case 0141 was the largest remaining civil forfeiture case against the Marcos estate. Imelda Marcos remains a convicted graft defendant on appeal for the seven counts decided by the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division on November 9, 2018.
